My Wine Journey
It all began in a basement in Pequannock, NJ, 1972. I was just a child, a daughter of an immigrant, a first-generation Italian-American, but even at three years old, I was captivated. It started with watching, assisting my father at seven (in my Italian culture, you're never too young to embrace family traditions). That basement, our family's heart, was where the magic happened.
I remember the "oversized eggplant press"—what I later learned was a grape press—the rows of wine barrels, the anticipation of the tastings, and the empty wine gallons waiting to be filled. It was an extraordinary experience, a gift I cherish to this day.
After fermentation, the finished wine was shared with family and friends, a central part of our gatherings around the table. The wine, paired with our homemade caciocavallo, mozzarella, prosciutto, soppressata, capicolla, and salsiccia, was a feast for the senses. It was a glimpse into the world of Italian cicchetti or piatto piccolo, a taste of the hospitality we shared with unexpected visitors, and a beautiful preview of our holiday traditions.
